1 Identify your priorities
Before you start looking for a job, you need to know what work-life balance means to you. What are your non-negotiables, such as working hours, location, commute, salary, benefits, culture, and values? What are your negotiables, such as tasks, projects, deadlines, feedback, and growth opportunities? How do you measure your success and satisfaction at work? How do you balance your personal and professional commitments and interests? Write down your answers and use them as a guide for your job search.

First, define what work-life balance means to YOU. It doesn't matter what a potential employer offers if it doesn't match with your needs. In the interview stage, ask specifically about their busiest quarter and how they manage during this time. This will tell you about possible overtime, incentives, and expectations of their employees. If employees aren't treated fairly during a peak business season, imagine what that would look like on a regular day.

2 Research potential employers
Once you have a clear idea of what you want, you need to find out which employers can offer it. You can use various sources to research potential employers, such as their websites, social media, blogs, podcasts, newsletters, and reviews. Look for clues about their mission, vision, values, culture, policies, and practices. How do they treat their employees? How do they handle stress, conflict, and change?

Pay attention to when you receive communication from the organization during the interview process. Is the hiring team often burning the midnight oil? Are you receiving scheduling emails or requests after hours or on weekends? While a good recruiter wants to do everything possible to move you through the process timely, if they don't have time to respond to you during core business hours, it could be telling as to the organization's culture around work-life balance.
