Yesterday, I had the opportunity of delivering an overview of investment banking careers and M&A at UCL.Every year, I see students tripping over the same hurdles in their quest to break into banking. It's time to quit tripping and start sprinting!🕵️ Here are some insider tips from someone who has placed more than 250 students in banking over the past 7 years at top companies including Goldman Sachs, UBS, JP Morgan and MS among many others. ✅ The early bird catches the worm. Make your move now! Secure spring weeks and summer internships to give yourself a head start when it comes to graduate jobs.✅ If leading investment banks like Goldman Sachs or J.P. Morgan shut their doors, don't lose heart. There's a whole world of boutique investment banks awaiting your application.✅ Did you know there are over 2,000 financial services companies in the UK? Set a high target; aim to apply for 50 to 100 jobs each month. That's how you secure 2 to 5 interviews per month.Ready to break into banking like a pro?

I recently participated in JPMorgan’svirtual job simulation on the Forage platform, and it was incredibly useful to understand what it might be like to be part of an investment banking team at JPMorgan. The job simulation enabled me to become more familiar with advanced Excel and PowerPointand to develop my passion for supporting clients through large, complex transactions. These are the tasks I performed during my internship.* Identified an ideal M&A target for a client based on an assessment of their strategic and financial criteria.* Constructed a DCF model to calculate the valuation of the M&A target andadjusted the model to account for a competitor bid and supply chaininterruption.* Created a 2-pager for the client containing a company profile and summary ofthe auction process.Overall it was a great experience ❤️ #jpmorganchase #jpmorgan #investmentbanking

Have client names and contact information readily available3. Send cheat sheet email to MD before the call if appropriate or even better if you have a cheat sheet so you could chime in4. Prepare before the call, know background, who will be on the call, what do they know5. Always announce yourself on calls, don’t hide, be visible6. Always be prepared to turn on video camera for Zoom meetings (typically you don’t need to when you have not speaking role, but if everyone else turns it on you have to do so. You don’t want to be the stalking person who is afraid to turn on the video because your hair looks messy, and you wear an orange T-shirt7. When in doubt turn on your video on a Zoom call. It is a way to build relationship with the client even if you don’t have a speaking role8. Know how to introduce yourself. Practice it with your VP. They won’t think this is odd9. Come up with small talk and phrases when joining the call early and you’re the only one from the bank10. Write down how other opened the call and finished the call (sentences that can help you when your VP is late from calls)11.-100.
