Breaking Into Gerudo Town In The Latest Zelda Games (2024)

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild set a high bar for open-world games when it was released in 2017 and its recent sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, was even better in some ways. Characterized by its intense heat and desert storms, the Gerudo Region is one of its most iconic areas.

Gerudo Town lies deep within this harsh environment, making just reaching it a challenge. Finding a way to get into Gerudo Town can be much harder. Both games set up entrance into Gerudo Town as very different puzzles, and while it can be challenging, players will need to find their way inside the town's gates in both games.

Reaching Gerudo Town in Breath of the Wild is fairly straightforward, as the map marker for the main quest of freeing the Divine Beast Vah Naboris will lead players straight there. The Wasteland Tower unlocks the map for the region to make navigation even simpler. It's found atop the mountains that border the Northeastern side of the Gerudo Desert.

The town is at the end of a long main road that stretches from the Kay Noh Shrine and past the Kara Kara Bazaar. Upon reaching its gates, players will notice that Garudo Town's inhabitants are all female. They won't allow men, which they call 'voes,' inside. This means that even the legendary swordsman, Link, is prohibited from entering the town.

Given that only women (vais) can get into Gerudo Town in BOTW, Link will need to find a disguise. Outside the town, right next to the Daqo Chisay Shrine, is an adventurer named Benja. He's got a backpack on and is the only man around so he's hard to miss. He tells Link that he's heard of a man who's able to infiltrate the town and that he's frequently spotted at Kara Kara Bazaar. Kara Kara Bazaar is located back along the main road, about halfway between Gerudo Town and the Kay Noh Shrine at the Northeastern edge of the desert.

Once there, players should talk to another man with a backpack called Robsten. He says he hasn't heard of a man dressed as a vai, but that "there was that pretty Hylian gal at the general store. It's unusual to see a Hylian girl dressed like a Gerudo." Players should follow this hint and head to the general store. Inside, there are several women, but the important one here is called Shaillu. She can be found in the back right of the store behind a counter.

Link can ask Shaillu about a "sneaky man" and she'll reply by saying "there's a Hylian vai who likes to relax on the roof of the general store." A ladder outside lets Link climb up to reach the roof. If the "sneaky man" isn't there, it might be worth visiting in the afternoon to intercept them. As Link talks to them, several dialogue options will appear.

The first dialogue option doesn't matter, but the second one is important. Players need to choose the "You're very beautiful!" option since the person will react by offering to sell the outfit to Link for 600 Rupees. It's then a simple case of buying the outfit, equipping it, and returning to Gerudo Town where Link, now disguised as a woman, will be able to walk right in.

Reaching Gerudo Town in Tears of the Kingdom is more complicated than it was in its predecessor, mainly because of the large sandstorm ravaging the surrounding area, obscuring vision and impacting Link's ability to use his map. To make navigation easier, players should first activate the Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower at the coordinates -2432, -2178, 0307. From here, place a pin on Kara Kara Bazaar and another just south of the Regional Phenomena quest marker, where Gerudo Town is hidden.

From the Skyview Tower, players should follow the main road to Kara Kara Bazaar and activate the nearby Mayatat Shrine, as it's a useful fast travel point players can return to if they're lost. Near the shrine is an updraft that will prove vital for navigation. Players can use their gliders to ride these gusts of wind into the sky above the sandstorm.

Once in the air, players should quickly check their map and start gliding toward their dropped pin. Once Link drops back into the sandstorm, continue heading forward until another updraft becomes visible. Throughout the desert, players will occasionally bump into a new type of enemy, Gibdos, which are resistant to regular attacks, but extremely weak to elemental damage. Simply use elemental arrows to take them out from a distance before continuing onwards. After following the string of updrafts and using them to point Link in the right direction, players will eventually reach Gerudo Town.

When Link arrives at the town, it will be deserted because of the sandstorm. Its inhabitants have all moved inside a bunker underneath the large building at the front of the town's main square. Like in Breath of the Wild, Link is not allowed into Gerudo Town because he's male. This time, though, he doesn't need a disguise to sneak in because of his new abilities.

Directly to the left after entering the town's main gates, there's water flowing from a roof into a well. This well is Link's way in. Players should jump down, landing in a pool of water, before swimming along the tunnel. Continue straight until the tunnel joins with another flowing stream with several glass bottles bobbing along it. These bottles contain love letters from a Gerudo woman, who's looking for a voe to rescue her. These tell Link he's heading in the right direction and will be able to get into Gerudo Town soon.

Continue to the end of the tunnel, where the bottled letters are being dropped from. There's also a jug attached to a string hanging into the water and flaming lights surrounding the area so players will know it's the right place. From here, simply use Ascend to climb through the ceiling straight into the Gerudo Shelter. Helping Riju, the Gerudo Sage, clear the sandstorm as part of Tears of the Kingdom's main questline will finally allow the Gerudo to go back outside and restore the town to a bustling market hub once more.
