The Different Types of Bernedoodles

Intelligent, goofy, and loyal, Bernedoodles, while not yet quite as popular as their brother breeds the Labradoodle and the Goldendoodle, are becoming more established as a breed in their own right.

These gorgeous dogs combine the very best traits of Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. Still, they can vary significantly in height, weight, and appearance depending on the parent dogs and their Doodle generation.

Sizes

In terms of size, the most significant indicator of your Bernedoodle’s adult height and weight is which type of Poodle was used in the breeding. Standard, Miniature, and Toy Poodles correspond with Standard, Medium/Miniature, and Tiny (Toy) Bernedoodles respectively.

Generations

The generation to which your pup belongs also plays a key role. You may have heard people talking about F1, F1b, and F2 Doodles. This basically refers to whether they have purebred parents or are the product of other Bernedoodles.

Here are a few of the most common Bernedoodle generation types:

Bernedoodle Size Predictions

Whichever generation of Bernedoodle you decide on, you will need to have an understanding of their potential adult size to ensure you are fully prepared for taking care of them. Their adult size will determine the amount of food you will need to factor into your budget as well as the size of any accessories such as beds and crates.

So let’s take a little look at some of the information we have about Bernedoodles:

Bernedoodle Size Chart & Growth Patterns

As with most dog breeds, Bernedoodles have their most significant growth period in the first 4-8 months of their lives. At this time, they will get to around 50% of their adult weight.

This is why it’s particularly important that your Bernedoodle puppy gets the correct nourishment they need to grow that adorable little body into a healthy adult one. Check out our guides on best dog food for Doodle puppies here.

The age at which a Bernedoodle reaches its maximum height is very much dependent on their type. Smaller dogs, such as Tiny Bernedoodles naturally achieve this much earlier at around 8-10 months, while with Standard Bernedoodles may take up to 14 months to get to their full size. Miniature Bernedoodles will sit somewhere between this at 10-12 months.

When they get to their adult size, they will likely continue to grow outwards as their muscles develop. This means their weight will continue to go up.

Speaking of, we’ve been collecting weight data from our Doodle Weight Prediction Calculator. The below Bernedoodles size chart / graph shows theaverage weights by age (in weeks), per size of Bernedoodle.

At What Age Are Bernedoodles Considered Fully Grown?

While there are no guarantees with hybrid dogs breeds, careful observation of the various types and generations of Bernedoodles now allows us to make some pretty decent predictions on their adult size and weight.

Their specific rate of growth, as well as their final size, has a lot to do with the type of parent Poodle used in the original, as well as in any subsequent breeding. This enables us to categorize Bernedoodles in Standard, Miniature and Tiny sizes.

Smaller dogs will attain their adult size much sooner than their larger counterparts who may not reach full maturity until well into a year of their lives. Either way, their weight is likely to continue to increase even once their size is fixed.

Being able to predict your new pup’s final size is vital for a whole host of reasons. Hopefully, the information included here will allow you to do that with a fair degree of accuracy.
