Bernedoodle temperament

Companionship: Bernedoodles are one of the top crossbreeds in craving attention, love, and care from humans. They want to be with people whenever possible – it doesn’t matter if it is playing games, snuggling on the sofa, or going on a walk!

Intelligence: A smart breed that quickly adapts to various situations, the Bernedoodle can be quickly trained with sharp intelligence from the Poodle.

Loyalty:
Showing strong traits from the Bernes Mountain Dog, Bernedoodles have a strong commitment to their families and especially children. The strong bond that the breed develops with their owners has earned them the nickname “the velcro breed.”

Playfulness:
Known for their love of playing and goofy sense of humor, Bernedoodles take the definition of “a dog that loves to play” to the next level. They enjoy spending quality time doing any activity with humans.

Stubbornness:
Bernedoodle puppies sometimes show the stubborn traits of the Bernese Mountain Dog, although they usually outgrow this trait as they get older. The key is training Bernedoodle puppies with consistency and patience, especially when they are young.

Good with Children and Pets: When properly socialized, Bernedoodles can be good with children and other pets. Early exposure to different people, animals, and environments can help shape their behavior positively.

Playful: Many Bernedoodles have a playful and fun-loving side. They can be energetic and enjoy activities like fetch, tug-of-war, and other interactive games.

It’s important to work with a reputable breeder who focuses on producing healthy and well-socialized puppies. Additionally, early and consistent training, proper socialization, and regular exercise are essential for raising a well-adjusted and happy Bernedoodle. Keep in mind that individual puppies can vary widely, so spending time with the puppy’s parents and asking the breeder about their breeding practices can give you a better idea of what to expect.

Bernedoodle Breed history

Like the Goldendoodle and many other “doodles,” the Bernedoodle breed is a recent crossbreed originating in the early 2000s.

The original goal with Bernedoodles was to have a good companion dog that was also hypoallergenic and a low shedder. The combination that seemed ideal for this dog combination was mixing a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle.

The result is a designer dog that combines the intelligence and hypoallergenic traits of the Poodle with the loyalty and companionship of the Bernese Mountain Dog.

It also helps stabilize some of the health concerns associated with the Bernese Mountain Dog.

While the most popular Bernedoodles are first-generation crossbreeds, some breeders have started breeding multigenerational Bernedoodles to emphasize specific traits.

Bernedoodle Average size

Bernedoodles come in three sizes based on the size Poodle used.

  • Toy Bernedoodles: 12-17 inches in height and 10-24 pounds in weight.
  • Mini Bernedoodles: 18-22 inches in height and 25-49 pounds in weight.
  • Standard: 23-29 inches in height and 50-100 pounds in weight.

Average Bernedoodle lifespan

As a new crossbreed, the average Bernedoodle’s lifespan is not fully known. However, many experts agree that 12-15 years is an accurate number.

Bernedoodle body features

Bernedoodles have colorful coats and beautiful exterior. Many have a dominant black color on their back, around the eyes, and on the legs. This is mixed with a white or light-colored chest.

Many Bernedoodle’s also have white markings on their tails, paws, and mouth. Some also have tan or brown markings mixed with the black and white

grooming Your Bernedoodle Puppy

While Bernedoodle’s coats do favor the Poodle, that doesn’t mean they do not require regular care and grooming.

Some Bernedoodles have thicker and longer hair, while others will have shorter and curlier hair.

The coat should be regularly brushed several times a week with a slicker brush. It should also be trimmed several times a year.

If they are properly brushed and groomed, Bernedoodles do not need to be bathed regularly due to oils in their coat and skin.

Keeping Your Bernedoodle Puppy Healthy

Because the breed is still young, there are not a lot of specifics known to the Bernedoodle’s exact health. However, most agree that the breed is relatively healthy and not subject to any disease that is not also relevant to either the Poodle or Bernese Mountain Dog.

Due to their floppy ears, you will want to check regularly behind the ears for infection. To prevent infection, make sure the ears completely dry out whenever your Bernedoodle becomes wet.

Like all dogs, Bernedoodles are susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia.

Hip and elbow dysplasia occurs when the leg or hip becomes weakened, and it can result in arthritis or lameness if not addressed.

One of the best ways to prevent this is by keeping your dog from excessive running on hard surfaces. This is especially vital when they are a puppy.

Typical Bernedoodle Allergens

With Poodles being used in the breeding, many make the false assumption that Bernedoodles will be allergy-free.

Allergens are caused by dander, which is dead skin cells. Any animal, including humans, shed these dead skills. And while Bernedoodles shed less than Bernese Mountain Dogs, this does not eliminate dander or allergens.

One of the factors of the Bernedoodle’s allergen level is the coat. As mentioned earlier, some coats will be thicker with wavier hair, while others have shorter and curlier hair. Because Bernedoodles are a crossbreed, it is difficult to determine the exact characteristics of the puppy’s coat when they are young.

If you have a family member with allergen concerns, it is always good to consult with your family physician.

David G. Our family could not be any happier with our Bernedoodle! We absolutely love her and she has blessed us so much. Truly, the experience from start to finish with Infinity Pups was AMAZING! The communication was great and they were above all, incredibly kind-hearted. When our puppy arrived, she had her personal care package complete with vet records, food, toys and a sweet note. In fact, they sent precious pictures the morning of her flight just to keep us updated. Class act. I highly recommend Infinity Pups! LoveLoveLove!! ❤️

Collier N. We are new Bernedoodle breeders in Tx. (Texas Bernedoodle Dynasty) We purchased three of our breeding prospects from Puppy Love in 2021. They are everything Joel described them to be. We dealt directly with Joel and he made all of the transactions very easy to maneuver thru and also set up all of the health proceedures and transfer. I wholeheartedly recommend Joel and Kate with Puppy Love for any pet or breeding prospects. Joel is always there to answer any questions we have and very interested in hearing about his pups as they grow up. Five Stars for this great breeder.!!
