What to wear to your first ballet class as an adult? ›

You want to wear clothes that are tight-fitting and show your form. This could be a leotard and tights or tight-fitting exercise clothes. It is possible to wear socks to your first few classes, but you'll want to get a pair of ballet shoes sooner than later.

Is there a dress code? Dancers are in costume, but you don't have to be. You will see people in gowns and others in jeans. Wear what you like and what makes you comfortable.

Therefore, most ballet dancers choose to wear leotards and tutus to prevent unnecessary risks of falling and hurting themselves, especially while performing on-stage. Many ballet dancers are required to wear leotards and tutus to highlight the gestures and movement of their dancing.

A Biketard (also called unitard) is a good alternative option to a leotard as it can be more comfortable, especially for younger children. It has the leotard and shorts all in one garment so it provides more leg coverage and tends not to ride up so much.

Both! Dance tights can be worn over or under the leotard. Most younger dancers wear them under their leotard however, the older girls (around 12 years old and up) wear them how they want unless their studio has a requirement.

Most of our beginners come straight from work or have plans afterwards. It's common to see many of them arriving in business casual work attire. Some dancers also choose to wear jeans and a T-shirt, while others prefer stretchy yoga pants. As long as you're comfortable, that's all that matters.

Ballet Shoes

Always buy your shoes and have them expert fitted at your local dance store. Ballet shoes can be leather or canvas, and come with a full-sole or split sole. Typical colors are pink, black and white. Beginners will need a flat leather or satin shoe, with leather lasting much longer than the satin.
